Finding the Words: Learning to “Speak” on the Flute
Once when at a loss describing his instrumental work, Tchaikovsky cited the poet Heinrich Heine as saying, “Where words leave off, music begins.” In the realm of art songs, text has always enriched musical storytelling. Yet, when it comes to playing our instruments, the word-music relationship can be more indirect: can flutists gain something from delving into the specificity offered by language? What does it mean to “say something” with music?
This one-hour interactive presentation led by flutist Annie Wu is meant for flutists of all levels interested in becoming more communicative performers. Attendees will get a survey of the language of other art forms, text-based music, gestural thinking, and body language, and leave with a greater understanding of language's role in articulating expressive intention.
